Accepting Nominations: 2018 Pro Bono Volunteer Awards

We are currently accepting nominations for our 2018 Benjamin R. Lacy, IV Volunteer of the Year and George H. Hettrick Leadership Awards.  The Greater Richmond Bar Foundation will present these two awards at our annual Pro Bono Celebration on October 24, 2018.    

Benjamin R. Lacy, IV Volunteer of the Year Award

In 2008, the Greater Richmond Bar Foundation established the Pro Bono Clearinghouse Volunteer of the Year Award*, to recognize volunteers dedicated to pro bono service to the nonprofit sector. Please click here to complete the nomination application, by Noon on Friday, September 21.  

Candidates for this award should meet the following criteria:

  • Be a member in good standing of the Virginia State Bar with laudable professionalism and personal character;
  • Demonstrated a commitment to provide legal services to the nonprofit sector or a nonprofit organization;
  • Actively volunteering with the Foundation’s Pro Bono Clearinghouse or General Counsel Program.


George H. Hettrick Leadership Award

In 2015, the Greater Richmond Bar Foundation established the George H. Hettrick Leadership Award**, to recognize outstanding efforts, innovative thinking and the development of pro bono programs designed to reach unmet legal needs in our community. Please send nominations with a resume and letter of support to Ali Fannon at afannon@grbf.org 

Candidates for this award should meet the following criteria:

  • Be a member in good standing of the Virginia State Bar with laudable professionalism and personal character;
  • Demonstrated a commitment to provide legal services to underrepresented;
  • Inspires and guides others to participate in the provision of pro bono services through leadership roles;
  • Established effective partnerships in the legal services arena to sustain service delivery; and
  • Contributed positively to the legal landscape of the central Virginia area through the development and implementation of innovative approaches to service delivery.

About the Foundation’s Pro Bono Awards:

*The Late Benjamin R. Lacy, IV was a long time shareholder at Sands Anderson. He had an exemplary career and was recognized by all as a wonderful lawyer, volunteer and friend. In 2008, GRBF recognized Mr. Lacy as the recipient of the first Pro Bono Clearinghouse Volunteer of the Year for his superlative service to nonprofits. In 2010 Mr. Lacy joined the Greater Richmond Bar Foundation’s Board of Directors.  In his honor the Foundation renamed the Clearinghouse Award after Mr. Lacy, posthumously, in 2012.

**George H. Hettrick
is a founding member of the expanded Greater Richmond Bar Foundation, and Past President. Mr. Hettrick served as Chair of Hunton & Williams’ Pro Bono Leadership Committee and established pro bono offices of Hunton in the Church Hill Community of Richmond, as well as in Charlottesville and in Atlanta. Under his leadership, Hunton has an exemplary pro bono culture and years of 100% pro bono participation. He is the founder of Firms In Service, a pro bono collaboration among Richmond’s big law firms. He currently serves as a member of the Virginia Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Commission.  His pro bono leadership is recognized locally, statewide and nationally.
