Firms In Service is a collaborative effort of fifteen law firms and businesses to increase the availability of pro bono legal services for the underserved the Richmond community.  Since 2007, the pro bono leadership of these firms have met regularly for the purposes of sharing information about their respective pro bono and community service programs and seeking ways in which, working together, they can enhance the availability of quality legal services to needy citizens in the Greater Richmond area.  The FIS members share the belief that in the field of pro bono and community service, the principles of traditional competition among law firms should not, and do not, apply.

Because Firms In Service and the Greater Richmond Bar Foundation share the same mission – increasing much-needed pro bono legal services to citizens and area non-profits – the two organizations are closely aligned.  One of the goals that Firms In Service adopted is to encourage law firms to provide support for the Greater Richmond Bar Foundation and its endeavors.  The Foundation’s flagship program, the Pro Bono Clearinghouse, provides invaluable pro bono services to area nonprofit organizations.  The pro bono services are provided by lawyers, mostly from Firms In Service-represented firms, who have generously volunteered to serve with representation for transactional matters.

Firms In Service also supports the Eviction Diversion Program launched in October 2019 in the City of Richmond.  This program is a public-private partnership between the City of Richmond, HOME (Housing Opportunities Made Equal) and GRBF.  Volunteers serve as Third Party Neutrals in certain eviction cases pending in the General District Court to assist with payment plans in lieu of judgment and possession.

Over the last decade, Firms In Service has grown from a five-member group to fifteen members, as listed below.  For more information on joining Firms In Service – Richmond, please contact Shane Harper at grbfadmin@grbf.org.
