2015 George H. Hettrick Leadership Award Recipients
On November 11, 2015, at the Annual Pro Bono Celebration, the Greater Richmond Bar Foundation conferred the inaugural George H. Hettrick Leadership Awards to three attorneys integrally involved with Veterans’ Initiative program: Robert “Bob” Barrett, Matt Kapinos and Heather Lockerman. Through the Virginia Bar Association’s Veterans Issues Task Force, Barrett and Kapinos created the program to provide pro bono legal assistance to veterans, service members and their spouses. Lockerman became a key volunteer in 2013 working with Barrett and Kapinos to place cases with the network of volunteers located throughout the Commonwealth. All three have continued to advocate tirelessly for legal services for Veterans.
Bob Barrett is an Assistant General Counsel with Suez Treatment Solutions North America. Bob is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and George Washington University Law School. Before law school, he was an Army Infantry Captain and served over five years on active duty. He is a founding member of the Virginia Bar Association’s (VBA’s) Veterans Issues Task Force, which formed in 2009 to raise awareness of veteran’s legal issues.
Matt Kapinos is an attorney with McGuireWoods’ Energy team and is also a founding member of the VBA’s Veterans Issues Task Force. Matt is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. Prior to starting law school, he spent five years on active duty as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne Division and the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment. His service included combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Airborne, Ranger, and Jumpmaster schools, and he is a recipient of the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and two Bronze Stars. Matt serves on the Board of the Greater Richmond Bar Foundation.
Heather H. Lockerman is a Senior Assistant Attorney General and the Section Chief of the Financial Law and Government Support Section. At the Attorney General’s Office, she provides counsel to the Virginia Department of Veterans Services and is working to create a Veterans assistance program. Prior to the Attorney General’s Office, Heather was a senior associate at Troutman Sanders LLP. She is a graduate of the University of Virginia and the University of Richmond School Of Law. In 2013, in honor of her mother who served in the Army Nursing Corp, she began volunteering with the Virginia Bar Association’s Veterans Issues Task Force.
