Volunteer Opportunity: Nonprofit General Counsel Program

The Greater Richmond Bar Foundation (“GRBF”) has been connecting nonprofit organizations (“NPOs) with pro bono legal resources in the greater Richmond area through the Pro Bono Clearinghouse since 2001.  The need is great among NPOs for legal assistance and guidance, but NPO resources are scarce and more appropriately allocated to the charitable mission of the NPO.

To help address this issue, the GRBF started the Nonprofit General Counsel Program to provide another resource to the amazing NPOs in the greater Richmond area.  Our 2018 pilot year was a success, and the General Counsel Class of 2019 is now underway.  GRBF is looking for volunteer lawyers who are willing to participate in the 2020 Nonprofit General Counsel Program Class.  Participation in the program requires a one-year commitment, during which you will be matched with a specific NPO that has been chosen through an application process administered by the GRBF in partnership with The Community Foundation.  Volunteers will serve as advisors to the NPO with which they are matched.  They will serve as a sounding board for the executive director and the board of directors to help spot legal issues and identify legal needs for the NPO.  The Volunteer will not be a member of the NPO’s board of directors and will not be expected to provide legal counsel to the NPO; rather, the Volunteer will leverage the resources of the GRBF, particularly the Pro Bono Clearinghouse, and the members of the private bar in and around Richmond to provide recommendations and referrals to the NPO for any legal issues he or she identifies.

To help prepare volunteers to spot potential issues, a library of trainings in five areas* of NPO law will be available.  We will also host roundtables for the entire class of volunteers to share experiences, collaborate on common issues faced by the NPOs, and to participate in training programs.  The General Counsel Program volunteer position will begin in January 2021, at which time the volunteer will meet with the NPO to set up an initial meeting.
